What Causes Cavities (Tooth Decay)???

Pay attention to what you eat and drink to protect your teeth.

In the above photo, you can see the surface of a tooth blown up. As you can see, the surface of a tooth has many ridges and valleys. It is in these ridges and valleys that food particles and liquids containing sugars can be trapped leading to tooth decay.

When people ask why they have a cavity, especially when they are more infrequent for a person, it is almost always our diet creating the issue. Without food particles and sugary/acidic drinks, there would be nothing for bacteria to feast on to break down a tooth. Unfortunately, many of our foods we consume today are highly processed and it is exactly this highly processed food that leads to a higher prevalence of tooth decay.

These highly processed foods and sugary drinks can get buried in the grooves of teeth, even where a toothbrush cannot clean. It is because of this fact that people will develop a cavity even when they have superb brushing habits. Cavities develop over time and due to the grooves in our teeth sometimes a cavity isn't preventable. However, by going to the dentist these small cavities can be detected and treated early on and prevent the cavity from burying deeper into the tooth.

This is the reason dentists promote sealants because they cover these grooves and seal them off from food particles, sugary drinks, and the bacteria that break a tooth down. Sealants are one of the best methods of preventing tooth decay and cavities, especially in children, so that people can have healthy teeth for a life time. If you haven't had your child seen by a dentist, now is the time. Setting your children up for success with healthy teeth is something that is invaluable.

Understanding Medicare and Dentistry

Let's Help You Understand Medicare and How It Works With Dental Benefits.

First off, what is Medicare? Medicare is federal health insurance for people 65 and older. As people age and reach retirement, many lose their health and dental insurance benefits they may have been receiving from their employer. This is where Medicare comes in to help.

When you turn 65, Medicare is provided to people free of charge for Parts A and B. What are parts A and B? Parts A and B of Medicare are ONLY health insurance coverage, which include inpatient hospital care and doctors' visits/outpatient hospital care, respectively. The free part of Medicare does NOT cover dental care.

Dental benefits are only covered under Part C of Medicare if you choose to PAY for coverage. Dental benefits are not free and are not covered under Medicare unless you CHOOSE to add additional dental coverage to your Medicare plan. These plans are typically called Medicare Advantage Plans or Medicare Replacement Plans and have monthly premiums in addition to traditional Medicare. These dental benefit plans are typically administered by private dental insurance groups for the federal government, such as Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Humana, Aetna, etc.

These additional plans for dental coverage under Medicare can be expensive, typically ranging from $50 to over $200 a month depending on the type of coverage you want. Many times, the coverage through these Medicare Advantage/Replacement plans have exclusions and limitations which often go unrealized by the policy holder.

In conclusion, the hard and fast is this: Traditional Medicare DOES NOT cover dental care. You have to sign up for a Medicare Advantage/Replacement Plan which includes dental coverage which will have a monthly premium associated with it. Please do not think that when you turn 65 you automatically get dental coverage because this is not true. Health insurance and dental insurance coverage have always been separate entities and this does not change with Medicare.

How can Reed Dental Center help? Our office offers the Reed Dental Center Membership Plan which is exclusive to our office. We are a local dental office and we want to help those in our community achieve continued dental care as they reach retirement and Medicare age when they lose their dental benefits they may have had for their career lifetime. Our membership plan is less expensive than the monthly premiums to dental insurance companies you would be making with a Medicare Advantage/Replacement Plan and it does not have any limitations, exclusions, waiting periods, or denials. We can offer this membership plan at a lower cost because there is no middle man making the determinations and decisions. It's true dental care, as it was originally, between the dentist and the patient. The dentist has the autonomy to recommend the best dental treatment, or alternatives, for patients without big insurance companies making the determination for the patient based on what they can pay the least for. We all get frustrated with insurance companies, whether its home, auto, health, or dental. Did you know that there are warning signs before a tooth splits?

Did you know that teeth can crack? Cracks usually start out in teeth with no symptoms at all because they are superficial and small. As time progresses though, cracks can get bigger and they can bury themselves deeper into a tooth. When these cracks get through the hard shell of the tooth, the enamel, it can reach the underlying dentin. When a crack reaches the layer of the dentin inside the tooth the tooth can start to develop symptoms. These symptoms are can include pain when biting down on the tooth because of the increased pressure separating the crack as well as sharp pain when relieving the pressure because the separated portions of the tooth come back together when the pressure is gone. The symptoms are your tooth's warning mechanism to let you know that something isn't right. If you have these symptoms you should see your dentist as soon as possible as it could be a precursor to your tooth splitting in half or breaking. Unfortunately, when a tooth splits it can't be saved and has to be pulled. However, when a tooth breaks, sometimes it can be fixed and saved. Many times, people want the fastest and cheapest solution for a tooth problem which in many cases is a tooth extraction. Unfortunately, though this solution may seem to be the cheapest fix at the time, it is not the cheapest fix over the long term. The replacement options for a missing tooth are typically more expensive than the cost of saving a tooth.

Did you know that a cavity can destroy a tooth beyond repair in as little as 18 months?

Old Ads Promoting Poor Oral Health Decisions

Dentistry has come a long way...

It may seem laughable now, but not too long ago ads like you see shown above were used to promote products even though they were bad for people's oral health. We know that smoking and drinking soda are two things that are detrimental to our oral health. Smoking causes damage to the soft tissues in the mouth and can lead to cancers. The sugar in soda causes cavities and the destruction of teeth.

We do know that in order to keep our mouths and teeth healthy we should avoid smoking and sugary drinks like soda. We definitely should not be promoting it as something that is good for us. We know things that we should avoid to keep a healthy mouth, but what can we do to promote a healthy mouth?

Still, to this day, the best things we can do to keep our mouths and teeth in a state of good health is to brush twice a day and floss. Brushing after breakfast in the morning and brushing after the last meal/drink at the end of the day before bed will help keep our teeth healthy for a lifetime. Furthermore, using dental floss to remove debris between the teeth helps prevent cavities from developing and keeps the gums free from inflammation.

Oral Cancer Awareness Month

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Oral cancer affects nearly 54,000 people each year, and is roughly 3% of all cancers diagnosed annually. As a dentist, we do more than just take care of your teeth; we care for your overall oral health. At our office, oral cancer screenings are performed at your initial appointment and each routine appointment.

Oral cancers can develop on the tongue, the tissue lining the mouth and gums, the lips, and the roof and floor of the mouth. Signs and symptoms to be aware of regarding oral cancer include:

A lip or mouth sore that doesn't heal
A white or reddish patch on the inside of the mouth
Loose teeth
A growth or lump inside your mouth
Mouth pain
Difficult or painful swallowing

There are ways to reduce your risk and prevent oral cancer from developing including avoiding tobacco products, drinking alcohol in moderation, limiting sun exposure and wearing lip balm with sunscreen, eating a healthy diet, and visiting your dentist at least once a year for an oral examination.

Dry Mouth Can Be a Big Problem

Do you find it difficult to swallow? Do you feel that your mouth is burning? Do you have a sticky feeling in your mouth? These are all symptoms of dry mouth, a condition known as xerostomia. It may not seem like a big deal but dry mouth can make a major impact on your oral health in addition to affecting your quality of life.

Dry mouth can make the simple pleasure of eating difficult as saliva makes it easier to chew and swallow food. Saliva also helps prevent tooth decay by washing away food particles that otherwise would get stuck to your teeth creating an environment where bacteria can thrive. It is the acid from the bacteria that breaks down the hard outer surface of a tooth, called enamel. Thankfully, saliva also aids in neutralizing these acids produced by bacteria.

People with dry mouth experience a much higher rate of tooth decay as well as these issues:

Difficulty wearing dentures

A Dental Insurance Reform Victory!!!

Dentists fighting for their profession and their patients had a HUGE victory against dental insurance companies in 2022 in the state of Massachusetts. The Massachusetts measure establishes what is known as a medical loss ratio - a minimum percentage of premium dollars collected by an insurance company that must be spent on actual patient care and not on administrative costs such as salaries and marketing. The new measure that was signed into law on December 7, 2022, in Massachusetts requires the state's insurance carriers to spend at least 83% of premium dollars on patient care and also contains a key provision that does not allow carriers to raise premiums egregiously.

Why is this important to you as a patient? It's important because it requires dental insurance companies to use more of the insurance premiums you pay every month to be used directly toward your actual dental care! Introducing a medical loss ratio for dental insurance carriers means that dental insurance companies will not profit off of people paying for dental insurance benefits and not using them.

We, as dentists and dental specialists, hear from patients all the time that dental insurance is terrible and that they don't pay for hardly anything. Well, we have heard you and the dental professionals in the state of Massachusetts are leading the way to creating nationwide dental insurance reform to better serve our patients. Get excited! This is the first huge move in dental insurance reform in a very, very long time and has been way overdue. Expect the dentists in the state of Kansas to be fighting for our patients and our profession as well!

Sealants Prevent Tooth Decay

Help prevent your children from getting tooth decay by visiting the dentist and getting sealants!

Did you know that you can protect your children's teeth from dental decay by having sealants placed? Sealants are a protective coating that fills in and covers the grooves and pits on a tooth's surface. In the picture above (left) you can see the surface anatomy of a tooth showing the grooves and pits where bacteria can cause tooth decay. Additionally, you can see in the picture above (right) just how deep these grooves and pits can be and why, even with proper brushing, bacteria can get deep inside a tooth and cause decay.

Our foods that we eat, especially highly processed foods, breakdown and get stuck to our teeth. Over time, this repetition allows bacteria to thrive and produce acid that breaks down our teeth and leads to dental decay. As adults, we are much better at making sure our teeth are clean of any residual food debris, but children are not as skilled typically. This is why sealants are so important in protecting the health of your children's teeth as they learn how to properly brush and floss. There are many sugary snacks and drinks that kids love that make them even more susceptible to dental cavities so give your kids the best chance at maintaining strong, healthy teeth by scheduling a visit to the dentist today.

Periodontal Disease - A Disease of Procrastination

As a dentist, I have never come across anyone who was excited about losing a tooth (apart from children losing their baby teeth). Yet, many people avoid the one thing that can help them keep their teeth - a visit to the dentist! I know that there are many reasons why people choose not to go to the dentist, such as fear, traumatic past experiences, or not enough time. Regardless of the reason you've been putting off your much needed visit to the dentist, I want to encourage you to make an appointment. Making your dental appointment can easily be the hardest step, but once you make that effort and get scheduled you're well on your way to good oral health.

Did you know that periodontal disease can progress over time without causing pain? Did you also know that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in people over the age of 35? Both of these facts should worry you if you haven't been seen by a dentist in some time. Periodontal disease can progress without someone even being aware of it until it is too late. What happens when it's too late?

When it's too late, the end result of periodontal disease is tooth loss. You may ask yourself why this happens. The reason this happens is because the supporting structures of your teeth, your gums and bone, get infected. When this infection progresses unchecked by a dentist it causes your gums to recede and your bone to get destroyed. This results in tooth mobility which eventually leads to tooth loss.

2023 is the year to be PROACTIVE about your dental care!

There is a saying that dentists use which may not make sense when you first hear it but it will once I explain in a little more detail. The saying is, "Dentistry is not expensive. It's the lack of dentistry that's expensive." You may stop, reread that statement, and think to yourself what is he talking about? That doesn't make sense.

Dentistry is focused on preventative care, which is proactive care. Proactive care is much cheaper than retroactive care. In dentistry, being seen for your routine cleanings and checkups is part of your proactive care. When you are seen regularly by your dentist you help maintain the health of your teeth and the structures that support your teeth. The more you keep your routine care appointments the less likely you will have decay or other serious issues develop.

The most costly aspect of dentistry is the treatment of disease, not preventative care. Here's the good news: when you're seen routinely for preventative care you are preventing yourself from having costly dental treatment to fix and correct neglected problems. The longer you stay away from the dentist the greater your chance of having disease develop leading to more costly dental procedures.

This is why the saying at the beginning of this blog is true, when you focus on preventative care and see your dentist regularly twice a year you are protecting yourself from developing costly dental treatment. Preventative care is the least expensive aspect of dentistry, and is typically covered by insurance at 100%. It's when you don't visit your dentist and allow time for dental disease to progress that causes high dental costs.

Always remember, your teeth in health should not hurt. If your teeth hurt, visit the dentist sooner than later. The sooner you see a dentist the better the outcomes and the less costly it will be. Don't ignore your dental issues in 2023.

Most People Say a Smile Is the First Thing They Notice About You

Stop Hiding Your Smile!

It's time to focus on what's really important - your smile!

Did you know that 50% of people say that someone's smile is the first physical trait they notice? That's right! Your teeth are typically going to be the first thing that someone notices about you. Furthermore, a great smile has been listed as one of the features that most attracted someone to another person.

However, even given these facts, Americans do not prioritize their oral health. It is recommended that everyone brush their teeth twice a day for 2 minutes to effectively clean away dental plaque, but on average a person only spends approximately 48 seconds per day brushing their teeth. That's 20% of the time recommended each day! Can you imagine the results you would get only giving 20% effort to anything you applied yourself to? Now, on top of that, consider how infrequent people floss compared to brushing their teeth. Is your mind starting to grasp the lack of care the average American is giving to their oral health?

Here's another interesting fact: Americans spend a hundred billion dollars on hair care products a year but only spend 2 billion dollars a year on dental care products. Yet, dental health is far more important to your overall health. Studies have shown, repeatedly, that people notice and focus on a person's teeth and smile over their hair. Maybe it's because the condition of someone's teeth helps a person assess how well they take care of themselves and their health?

Teeth are not only important esthetically for your smile but they are very important to your overall health. Poor oral health has been linked to many systemic health issues. Don't put off going to see the dentist any longer.

Healthy Teeth Should Not Hurt

Tooth Pain? Be sure to see the dentist to check into it!

Did you know that when your teeth are healthy there shouldn't be any discomfort or pain? Pain, whether when chewing or doing nothing at all, is your body's way of letting you know that something is not right. The sooner you see the dentist, typically the better outcomes you will have and the cost of treatment is less!

The enamel that makes the hard outer shell of your teeth is a strong barrier that does not have the ability to relay pain. You can have cavities in your teeth that are only in the enamel and not even realize there is active disease in your teeth because of this. When you start to develop pain that is an indication that the decay in your teeth has penetrated through the enamel into the deeper part of your teeth where your body starts to register pain. This is why it is important to see the dentist for regular care and check ups to keep your oral health in tip-top shape.

In this month of November, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has helped me on my journey of making my dream a reality. It has been a dream of mine to build a dental practice that serves my local, hometown community with the best in dental care. Don't Put Off For Tomorrow What Should Be Done Today

Do you have dental insurance coverage through your employer or through an individual plan? If you do, then you have dental benefits! This is good news! In most cases, dental insurance will cover your basic dental cleanings and exams at 100%! So what does this mean if you don't visit your dentist? It means that the money that your employer and/or you have been paying for dental insurance throughout the year will go to waste. Why would you pay for dental insurance coverage and not use it when there is a benefit to you?

Dental insurance is different in that it acts like a discount card or coupon. You have a set limit to your benefits for the year. This limit is usually $1,000-$1,500 for the year, sometimes more depending on the policy. Many dental insurance policies start over with the new calendar year meaning that the yearly benefit you have to use toward dental treatment will be lost. Don't let any necessary dental needs go by without getting the issues fixed because dental issues only get bigger and more costly with time.

How to Keep Your Child's Teeth (and Yours) Happy and Healthy Through Halloween!

We all love candy! Even as a dentist, I enjoy candy! What better time of year to eat heaps of candy than Halloween!?!

Whether it's your kids going out Trick-or-Treating collecting candy or you buying candy for Trick-or-Treaters, candy will likely be more readily available now than other times of the year in your house. All this candy has a lot of sugar and sugar is what bacteria, "sugar bugs", like to break down into acid. This acid they produce is what causes destruction of your teeth leading to cavities.

A few ways to make sure your teeth are kept healthy through the holiday:

1) Limit the amount of candy you eat to only a few pieces at a sitting

2) Space out the frequency when you eat candy (don't snack on candy all day through)

3) Make sure to brush your teeth to remove any candy that can get stuck to the surfaces of your teeth

Kindergarten students at Farley Elementary Have Fun Learning About Teeth!

We went to Farley Elementary School this week to teach the kindergarten students how to properly brush and floss their teeth as part of National Dental Hygiene Month. The students had a great time learning about how to brush and floss their teeth, how many times a day they should brush and floss, how many times a year they should visit the dentist, and how many surfaces a tooth has! We also watched a cool educational video from the American Dental Association, "Dudley Visits the Dentist". A few students from each class showed us how they brush their teeth at home on Ollie the dog and a mouth model. It was a great day and it was fun to see young students enjoy learning about how to properly take care of their teeth and protect them from sugar bugs! Way to go Farley Foxes!

Teaching Students How to Properly Brush and Floss for National Dental Hygiene Month

As part of National Dental Hygiene Month Dr. Reed and his dental assistant, Michelle, went to McCarter Elementary School to teach the kindergarten students how to properly brush and floss their teeth. Dr. Reed and Michelle were both students at McCarter Elementary when they were children and they wanted to give back to their local school they have history with.

The students had a great time watching "Dudley Visits the Dentist" to learn about the experience of visiting the dentist's office. The students also had fun telling their stories about their trips to the dentist and stories about their teeth. Dr. Reed and Michelle used a mouth model and a dog puppet with teeth, Ollie, to let the students demonstrate how they brush their teeth.

Students learned fun facts throughout the presentation such as there are 5 sides to a tooth, they should brush their teeth 2x a day, and visit their dentist twice a year. At the end of the presentation the students got "Goodie Bags" which contained a toothbrush and paste, a dental activity book, and information for their parents on how to help their children properly take care of their teeth.

Postponing Your Dental Cleaning Can Lead to Serious Problems Later On

Having your teeth cleaned keeps your smile looking good but there is so much more to it than that! Being seen for regular dental cleanings maintains the health of your teeth as well as the gums and bone that support your teeth. It is critically important to keep the health of these structures for a lifetime!

If you've noticed that your gums look red and puffy in the mirror it is important to be seen by your dentist. Gingivitis (irritation, redness, and swelling of your gums) is the first visible sign of disease. In addition to the appearance of your gums, if they are bleeding when brushing and/or flossing you need to be seen for an evaluation and cleaning. The presence of bleeding gums is a manifestation of active disease of your gums. It is very important to see the dentist at this stage because the disease process can be eliminated and health can be restored.

The longer gingivitis stays around the more inflammation persists and more destruction happens to your supporting tissues, the gums and bone. In this stage, the gums start to pull away from the teeth and you develop recession. Recession is when the root of the tooth is no longer covered by gum tissue and is exposed. Furthermore, the inflammation in the gums then starts to spread to the underlying bone resulting in periodontitis.

Periodontitis develops when the supporting bone around the teeth gets destroyed. This destruction of bone can lead to mobility of teeth and tooth loss. When teeth start to get lost it directly affects your speech and ability to chew.

Gingivitis and periodontitis can develop and progress without any pain. Due to this disease being present without pain or discomfort people may believe that everything in their mouth is healthy and fine even when it is not. Getting in to see your dentist soon for treatment is one of the most important factors when it comes to the health of your teeth and gums as delaying treatment can have significant consequences. WU's Home Opener Football Game: Thursday, September 1, 2022 at 6 PM

The Washburn University Ichabods will kick off their 130th season on Thursday, September 1, 2022! They will be hosting Lincoln in Yager Stadium with start time set at 6 PM.

As a proud graduate of Washburn University, it's important to me to support my local community and alma mater! Come support the Ichabods with me and my staff! I will be out on the Washburn Union Lawn at 4 PM cheering on the Ichabods in the pre-game tailgate festivities! I will have a table set up for you to meet me and my staff. Dental issues can be problematic for a child in school. Studies show that children with poor oral health were 3x more likely to miss school compared to their counterparts due to dental pain.

Is Your Child Using the Appropriate Toothbrush for Their Age?

Did you know that there are toothbrushes based on a child's age?

It's easy to think that there is only a one size fits all toothbrush as an adult. However, there are different sizes of toothbrushes based on a child's age. These changes in toothbrush sizes as your child grows have a purpose.

As a parent of a newborn, you may wonder how am I supposed to take care of my baby's mouth and teeth. This is a valid question to ask. Typically, babies do not have any teeth when they are born. It isn't until around 6 months of age that a baby will start to show their first tooth. During this period of growth you can use a warm washcloth to clean and massage your baby's gums and teeth. You can also use a finger slip that is made of textured silicone to remove sugar and milk buildup.

You can use a baby toothbrush from the time your child gets their first tooth until the age of 2. It helps your child get acclimated to having a toothbrush in their mouth until they get to an age where they can start to mimic your actions. Starting habits early is important. If parents make brushing teeth important children will recognize this and follow in their footsteps.

Around the age of 2 children will usually have all twenty of their baby teeth. It is good to let your child try brushing their teeth on their own. It helps give them the skills they need for later in life. However, it is important for parents to follow up brushing their child's teeth after they have tried brushing on their own because this allows the parent to get all the surfaces that a child misses.

By the time a child reaches the age of 3 they have much better dexterity. They will be doing a better job at brushing their teeth on their own at this age, but it is encouraged to continue to monitor their brushing and follow up as needed. Their toothbrush handle will change in size so that they can grab and manipulate the toothbrush easier as they grow.

At age 6 children will start to get their first permanent molars in the back of their mouths behind their baby teeth. Your child's mouth will be getting larger to accommodate these teeth and a larger toothbrush head will be needed to reach the surfaces in the back. Again, the toothbrush handle will change to better adapt to the size of your child's hand as they continue to grow.

It is recommended that parents always monitor their child's brushing habits until good habits have been established. A child will begin to reliably brush their teeth between the ages of 6-9. Once your child can demonstrate good brushing habits they should be set for a lifetime of good oral health along with their regular visits to the dentist!

Sip All Day? Risk Decay!

Acid causes erosion of your teeth!

Certain drinking patterns can lead to tooth erosion and cavities. If you have a steady diet of drinking soda, sports drinks, or tea, you could be causing damage to your teeth. Having sugary drinks many times a day allows bacteria to make acid throughout the day. This raises your risk of getting cavities. While repeated exposure to drinks that are acidic raises your risk of tooth erosion.

What you can do to protect your teeth if you enjoy your sugary and acidic drinks:

1) Finish your drink within a time span of 20 minutes. This allows less exposure time and also allows the pH level of your mouth to get back to normal.

2) Drink or rinse your mouth out with water after you've finished your beverage. This helps to remove the sugar from your teeth and helps remove any acid that may be lingering.

3) Limit the amount of drinks you have in one day. If you can limit your consumption of highly sugary or acidic drinks to once a day your teeth will stay stronger and healthier over time.

The above diagram shows the relative acidity of common drinks. You can see that soda and sports drinks are very acidic which is not healthy for your teeth. Drinks such as milk and water are less acidic and provide a better option to keep your teeth happy and healthy.

Dental Emergency: Can You Get In To See Your Dentist?

Being able to get in to see your dentist during a dental emergency is important.

During a dental emergency, time can be a critical part of saving or losing a tooth. Whether an accident has happened that caused a tooth to come out of your mouth or a swelling has developed that is causing you severe pain, getting in to see your dentist in a timely manner is important. At Reed Dental Center we work hard to be sure to see our patients and new patients in a manner that gets their dental issues resolved promptly.

Did you know that if you had trauma to your mouth that resulted in a tooth being lost that you should wash the tooth off with water to remove any dirt or debris and reinsert the tooth into the socket? Or if you cannot place the tooth back in the socket you should place the tooth in milk until you can be seen by your dentist? In some scenarios when a tooth is lost it can be replaced in the socket and saved in your dentition if done in adequate time. Although additional treatment will be needed to keep the tooth long term you get to keep your original tooth and do not have to have an alternative replacement.

If you have a swelling due to an infection in a tooth, the sooner you get it diagnosed and treated the better the prognosis is to keep your tooth. Sometimes when infections develop and go untreated for lengthy periods of time the teeth associated with the infection cannot be saved due to the infection destroying the bone supporting the teeth. So if you have a painful swelling in your mouth be sure to contact your dentist to be seen to evaluate the health of your teeth and gums.

Are You Wearing Your Teeth Down?

Grinding teeth down is a slow process with serious effects, but can be prevented!

Have you ever noticed a sharp edge to your teeth? Have you been catching your tongue or your cheek between your teeth more frequently than before? Have you looked in the mirror and thought that your teeth look shorter? These are all symptoms of bruxism, a condition of grinding or clenching your teeth.

Grinding or clenching your teeth may not seem like an issue, but over time it can become something that significantly impacts your oral health and smile. It takes a long time for a person to grind their teeth down so it is very easy to think it's not a problem until there has been significant damage. The goal of any dentist is to prevent this damage from developing.

As dentists, we are trained to pick up on early signs and symptoms of grinding. When we notice these patterns in a patient's teeth it is recommended that an occlusal guard, more commonly referred to as a nightguard, be worm to prevent your teeth wearing on each other. Although they are commonly referred to as nightguards grinding can happen both during the day or at night. Typically, people will grind during the night as they sleep and are unaware it is even a habit, but others will clench their teeth while they are awake during the day. Regardless of when you are grinding, stopping the habit is important to protect your teeth.

Effects of grinding/clenching:

Teeth that are flattened, fractured, chipped or loose
Worn tooth enamel, exposing deeper layers of your tooth
Increased tooth pain or sensitivity
Tired or tight jaw muscles, or a locked jaw that won't open or close completely
Jaw, neck or face pain or soreness
Pain that feels like an earache, though it's actually not a problem with your ear
Dull headache starting in the temples
Damage from chewing on the inside of your cheek
Sleep disruption

Why It's Important to Fix a Cavity When It Is Small

Fixing a cavity when it is small is the best thing to do.

A cavity is a permanently damaged portion of the hard surface of a tooth that develops into a hole with time, hence a "cavity".

When you go to your dentist and a cavity is diagnosed, it may not be an issue that you are aware of. This is why visiting the dentist is important. The dentist can diagnose a cavity when it is small before any symptoms ever develop. This is a perfect time to take care of a cavity because it doesn't allow the cavity to become bigger with time and also results in less tooth structure needing to be removed to fix the problem.

It is much cheaper to place a filling in a tooth with a small cavity versus a tooth with a large cavity. As a cavity becomes bigger it involves more of the tooth structure and leads to increase costs to repair.

Being able to be seen by your dentist promptly is important.

We've all been there. A situation arises where you need to see a dentist or doctor. You give them a call in your time of need needing to get in sooner than later and you're told, "The soonest we can get you in is in three months." You think to yourself, "Three months?!?! That is ridiculous!" But you make the appointment for three months out because what else are you to do?

Three months goes by. You arrive for your scheduled appointment. You sit down in the waiting room ready to be called. Then it happens: the wait. Waiting 10 minutes past your appointment time...20 minutes past your appointment time...and sometimes over 30 minutes past your appointment time! It doesn't leave you feeling like your personal time matters or that your doctor values you as a patient, let alone a person.

There is more to smiling than just pretty, healthy teeth.

Research has shown that smiling releases hormones that make you feel good. These hormones are dopamine, endorphins and serotonin. Therefore, smiling can actually make you feel happier!

Going to the dentist is not easy for everyone. For some, a visit to the dentist can cause a lot of fear and anxiety. These feelings of fear and anxiety can stem from many things such as a past traumatic experience or neglecting to visit the dentist for many years.

At Reed Dental Center, we want everyone to have a great time at the dentist. We have created a space that is very calming and avoids the "clinical feel" associated with going to the doctor's or dentist's office. We strive in every way to make each person's visit to our office a memorable and enjoyable one. We want to redefine the experience of visiting your dentist office.

Why Do I Need a Dental Cleaning?

Whether it's been 6 months or 10 years since your last dental cleaning, chances are it's time for you to visit your dentist for your checkup!

Why do I need regular dental cleanings anyway?

Well, it turns out that through your diet and your natural flora in your mouth you develop plaque. Plaque is a sticky film that can cover your teeth that contains bacteria and food debris. When plaque forms on your teeth it can cause your gums to become red, puffy, and swollen. This inflammation of the gums causes a condition known as gingivitis and can result in gums that bleed.

Over time as plaque sits on your teeth it can harden and turn into tartar. When tartar develops it requires special dental tools to remove. Regular brushing and flossing is not enough to remove tartar from teeth.

What Happens When You Start Removing Teeth:

As a dentist, it is my goal to help people keep their teeth healthy and prevent tooth loss. However, accidents happen that cause a tooth to be lost or issues develop that require a tooth to be pulled. To some people having a missing tooth is not a big deal, but in reality missing teeth can lead to a number of dental issues.

Our teeth serve us in many ways. We use our teeth daily for speaking and eating which are very important. It may not seem like missing a single tooth could do much damage, but tooth loss can lead to chewing difficulties and speech problems. Furthermore, when a tooth is missing the teeth around the missing tooth will move which can lead to spacing issues in a smile.

The more teeth that are removed the more bone loss develops in the mouth which leads to an "aged" look of the face because the teeth that used to support the cheeks and lips are gone. Without the proper support from the teeth a person's face can appear "sunken in".

Routine appointments and early intervention are important in keeping teeth healthy and preventing progression of decay to the point of tooth loss. If you haven't been to the dentist in some time there is no time like the present to get an appointment. Dental decay and dental issues only get worse with time so making the decision to visit your dentist now could be the difference between keeping your teeth or losing them in the future.

The 33rd Annual Governor's Cup put on by the Sunflower Soccer Association of Topeka, Kansas is this upcoming weekend, May 13-15, 2022, and Reed Dental Center is happy to be a supporter of this youth soccer event! Dr. Reed will be out at the soccer fields during the weekend to meet families and answer any questions regarding dentistry and sports! Baby Teeth - Are They Important?

Baby teeth serve many important functions in a child's development.

Babies are typically born without any teeth in their mouths, but it doesn't take too long before they start to appear. The first baby teeth to come into a baby's mouth are the lower front teeth around the ages of 6 to 10 months. As soon as they start to appear it is important to know how to take care of them because tooth decay is possible even at an early age.

A good way to take care of your baby's teeth at such a young age is to use a warm wash cloth to wipe their teeth. It can be difficult to use a toothbrush at the beginning so a wash cloth is a good alternative. As a baby gets older you can introduce an age appropriate toothbrush to get them familiar with it. As your child ages, it is important to help and supervise their brushing habits even up to the age of 8. Brushing and flossing habits are skills that have to be taught as part of a good oral health routine.

Baby teeth aid in eating and speech development in children. In addition to these important aspects of a child's development, baby teeth also serve as place holders for the adult teeth to come in. When baby teeth are lost prematurely the spaces for the adult teeth to come in can be lost leading to teeth crowding or teeth that are not aligned properly.

Baby teeth serve children for a long time. The last baby teeth come out around the age of 11 or 12, and in some cases it can be even longer for children with late tooth development. This is why cavities found in baby teeth need to be repaired. A cavity allowed to grow for years could lead to infection, pain, and even tooth loss for your child. It is always easiest to take care of a cavity when it is small. Furthermore, cavities in children can be reduced or eliminated with the proactive placement of sealants to close off the areas of a tooth most susceptible to tooth decay.

How Do Your Drinking Habits Influence Your Oral Health and Your Teeth?

Your Daily Drinking Habits May Be the Cause of Your Dental Issues...

This subject is one that hits close to home. While I do not crave sugar or have a "sweet tooth" like some people do, I do enjoy the occasional soda. In my life, soda is the major contributor of sugar in my diet. Although it may be soda for me, it can be many types of drinks introducing sugar into our daily lives from coffee to energy drinks.

It's so easy for soda, or any other type of drink, to become a daily habit in our lives - when we go out to dinner, when we're at a sporting event, when we're at a celebration. The unfortunate truth is that it is not a healthy habit, for our teeth or our overall wellness. Tooth decay, or a cavity as most people call it, is one of the most prevalent diseases affecting people today. It's not difficult to understand how this could be when we stop to think about the amount of advertising and marketing that goes into all the beverage choices we have. Almost everywhere we go we are surrounded by drink options with high sugar content.

Even with proper tooth brushing and flossing, it may not be enough to prevent dental decay based upon our daily drinking habits. Every time we drink a beverage like a soda, a coffee, or an energy drink it lowers the pH of our mouth to an acidic level. This dip to an acidic level causes our teeth to weaken and become prone to cavities. Even if you have one 12 oz. soda a day, it typically has more sugar in that one can than is recommended for a whole day in a healthy diet.

So let's be wise in our decisions with what we are drinking and how frequently we are drinking them. If you have a sugary drink, try to limit the amount of time you're drinking it to 20 minutes or less and follow up with water.

Protecting Your Teeth While Participating In Sports

Reed Dental Center likes to support all our teams in the great state of Kansas, from local club teams to college sports teams. We want to congratulate the Kansas Jayhawks for making it to their 16th Final Four and becoming the NCAA leader in all time wins! Good luck to the Jayhawks in New Orleans this weekend!!!

To keep the sports theme going, I wanted to blog about common dental emergencies we see in sports and why having proper mouth guards are important.

Every sports fan has seen a favorite athlete take a serious tumble, receive an elbow to the face, or get smacked with a baseball. While it’s one thing to see these unfortunate incidents play out on ESPN, it’s a different matter when you, your son or your daughter is the one facing an injury. While mouth guards remain one of the best ways to reduce the risk of sport-related dental injuries, they are worthless if not used. In one survey conducted by the American Association of Orthodontists, a staggering 67 percent of parents admitted that their child didn’t always wear a mouth guard when playing sports. If that isn’t alarming enough, how about this: Out of the 7 million recreation-related injuries each year, more than half are sustained by children as young as five.

The 5 Most Dangerous Sports for Your Teeth

5. Skateboarding and Other “Thrill Seeking” Sports

This category includes snowboarding and skiing. While these do not involve any contact with opponents, a carelessly planned maneuver can result in contact with the pavement.

4. Boxing, Wrestling, and Marital Arts

It makes sense that if your opponent is throwing a punch at your face, he or she may take out a few incisors with it. Some studies show that more than 50 percent of wrestlers interviewed reported some type of dental injury. Because many of these sports, including martial arts, require the use of mouth guards, dental injuries are not as common as they could be.

3. “Ball and Stick” Games

These include baseball, hockey, lacrosse, and any game involving striking a ball with a stick or bat. While these games may actually account for a larger number of injuries, these injuries are generally not as severe because many of them, such as hockey and lacrosse, require players to wear mouth guards and other protective gear.

2. Football

You’re surprised it isn’t number one, aren’t you? At some point, it probably was. In the 1950s, prior to widespread mouth guard use, 54 percent of football injuries involved teeth. Fast forward 60 years, and the dental injury rate is around 2.8 percent.

1. Basketball

If you’ve ever played a pickup game at the local recreation center or watched the Kansas Jayhawks face an opponent, you understand that basketball is a “no-contact sport” in name only. In one study, men’s basketball counted for roughly 10.6 injuries per 100 athletes—more than three times the amount by football. Women’s basketball also had an exponentially higher rate of injury at 5 incidents per 100 athletes. Next time you watch a professional or college game, take a look at how many athletes are wearing mouth guards. They aren’t used as often as they are in football. In fact, an alarming number of collegiate basketball players have unprotected teeth!

Be prepared for dental emergencies!!!

It’s important to know what you can do to prevent tooth injury and dental emergencies. Of course, before you or your child begins any sport, talk to your dentist about the importance of mouth guards. While they are easily available, the most effective ones will be customized to fit the exact shape of your mouth. Whether you’re a point guard on the varsity team or you’re a weekend warrior, speak to your family dentist about what type of mouth guard would be right for you.

KMOM will be hosted in Hays, Kansas on the Ellis County Fairgrounds on March 25-26, 2022!

Dr. Reed and the staff at Reed Dental Center will be volunteering their skills and time to help people in need of dental care. KMOM allows dentists to serve those in desperate need of dental services, from cleanings to extractions, at no cost to them. This event is a great opportunity for dentists and their team members to use their skills to help those throughout the state of Kansas and give back! Doors will open at 5:30 AM for patients. What is KMOM?

About the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation

The Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation (KDCF) was established in 2002, from a grant from the Kansas Dental Association Relief Fund. Our mission is to provide funding and resources to improve oral health in the state of Kansas. Since our inception, we have provided $100,000 in grants targeted to small, community-based projects that focus on collaboration between community organizations.

Each year, dentists in Kansas donate approximately $50,000 to our annual campaign, which we use to grow the KDCF Endowment, a fund which now exceeds $300,000. The income generated from that trust, as well as other restricted gifts, are used to fund grants and scholarships to improve dental access in Kansas.

Additionally, the KDCF has donated more than $19 million in dental care through its signature event, the Kansas Mission of Mercy (KMOM). The Kansas Mission of Mercy (KMOM) is a two-day free dental clinic hosted once a year in different areas of the state. To date, over 30,000 patients have been served thanks to the generous contributions of Kansas dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants .

We provide cleanings, fillings and extractions to both children and adults, and our volunteer dentists, dental hygienists, and assistants do this at no charge. We donate our care to 1,000-2,000 patients during the two-day event, many who will wait in line overnight for much needed dental care.

Reed Dental Center - Redefining the Dental Experience

for Those in the Topeka Community

Dr. Reed, a Topeka native, is excited to be a part of his local, hometown community. It has been his goal to have his own dental practice to serve the friends, family, and neighbors that have helped him achieve his own personal goals in his life. Just this year, Dr. Reed realized this goal of his by opening Reed Dental Center. Dr. Reed and his staff started serving those in the Topeka and surrounding communities on January 31, 2022. Prior to the first day of seeing patients, Dr. Reed and his staff held a ribbon cutting ceremony to announce the opening of the new dental practice in Topeka.
