Cleanings (Prophylaxis)

Why do I need a cleaning?

  • Cleanings are recommended every 6 months as an action to prevent disease.  Regular cleanings by your hygienist help to remove plaque and hard buildup on your teeth that normal tooth brushing does not remove.  These regular cleanings and checkups help discover any disease or problems early so that treatment is kept simple and is less costly to patients.

The Problem:

  • Without regular cleanings and checkups, disease can progress in the mouth without a person being aware.  If disease goes undiagnosed it typically gets to a point where  pain develops causing someone to seek treatment.  When disease progresses to the point of pain, the treatment needed to fix and maintain the health of the teeth and gums is often more expensive.

What is a dental cleaning?

  • Teeth cleaning is part of oral hygiene and involves the removal of dental plaque from teeth with the intention of preventing cavities, gingivitis, and periodontal disease.
